The island state lies in the Mediterranean between Italy and Tunisia, which is why the island has played an important strategic role for centuries. Having a surface area of only 316 square kilometres, Malta is considered one of the so-called "dwarf states" of Europe. In spite of this, the island offers all the more attractions. Divided into three regions, the main island of the Republic stands out in particular through its diverse coastal topography: shallow beaches are faced by rock formations with grotto-like incisions. The stunning island landscape is home to a wide variety of plants. In Malta´s mix of sub-tropical and dry Mediterranean climate, tourists can enjoy countless traces of a rich history. These range from UNESCO world heritage monuments to ancient temples, through to two churches with the largest self-supporting domes in all Europe.
